Will The ‘Supergirl’ TV Series Crossover With ‘The Flash’ & ‘Arrow’?

Next week, The CW will broadcast a two night crossover event between “The Flash” and “Arrow.” But those shows are unlikely to ever feature characters from Fox’s “Gotham” or NBC’s “Constantine” despite the fact that all four TV series are based on characters owned by DC Comics and Warner Brothers.

CBS is going to jump into the superhero game next season with “Supergirl,” which was recently given a straight-to-series order. “Arrow” and “The Flash” executive producer Greg Berlanti is also producing “Supergirl” for CBS. And because CBS and The CW are sister networks, a shared universe comprised of all three series may not be out of the question.

During a profile in the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly (via KSiteTV), Berlanti hints that Supergirl “could enter the worlds of Arrow and The Flash.” It’s not a definitive statement, but he acknowledges that a crossover is a possibility.

Considering that “Arrow” and “The Flash” have largely been forbidden from referencing Superman or Batman directly (or even mentioning Gotham City or Metropolis), it will be interesting to see if the rules are different for Supergirl. For Supergirl to exist, she needs to be in a world where Superman is her cousin and the inspiration for her own heroic journey. Alternately, Supergirl could inspire Superman if Clark Kent is younger than she is in the TV series. But it’s hard to picture Supergirl’s world without her more famous relative.

Casting for “Supergirl” is already underway and announcements will likely be made in late 2015 or in early 2016.
