Last year at New York Comic-Con, Marvel used this convention as a stage to announce that Clark Gregg would reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC.
One year later, Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb held court again at NYCC, alongside two cast members from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”: Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge, who play Agents Fitz and Simmons, respectively.
Regarding the close relationship of Fitz/Simmon, De Caestecker compared them to siblings while Henstridge equated them with the dynamic of an old married couple.
Humorously, Henstridge declared her love for Loki and said that he only needs someone to talk to… and she can do that. On another relationship front, Loeb indicated that Coulson’s romance with “the cellist in Portland” mentioned in The Avengers may come up again during the show.
One thing that will definitely come up again is how and why Coulson is still alive. Loeb definitively said that fans will learn the truth about Coulson’s resurrection. Loeb also noted that veteran actor, Titus Welliver will guest star in the sixth episode of the season as Agent Blake, a part he originated in the short film Item 47, that was released on The Avengers Blu-ray.
Loeb, De Caestecker and Henstridge seemed excited by the recent full season pickup of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.;” particularly if it means that the series could tie into the Marvel Phase Three films or even enter the Marvel Universe as a comic book series. Henstridge also added that the additional episodes will allow the backgrounds of their characters to be explored.
Next Tuesday’s episode, “Eye Spy” was also screened for the crowd in its entirety. The episode introduces Akela Amadala, a rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with ties to Coulson. Stop reading this report now if you don’t want to see some MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
