Late last year, the long simmering “Beverly Hills Cop” TV adaptation finally landed at CBS after Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) was attached as the writer and executive producer. And with the start of production looming, a prominent feature film director has signed on as well.
According to Deadline, Barry Sonnenfeld has agreed to direct the “Beverly Hills Cop” pilot and serve as an executive producer as well. Sonnenfeld has previously directed several memorable movies, including The Addams Family, Get Shorty and the Men in Black trilogy. Sonnenfeld has also directed episodes of “Pushing Daisies” and “Suburban Shootout” for television.
The new “Beverly Hills Cop” TV series serves as a continuation of the feature film trilogy starring Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a Detroit police officer who originally came to Los Angeles to avenge his friend. The action will now focus on Axel’s son, Aaron Foley (Brandon T. Jackson), who ends up following in his father’s footsteps in Beverly Hills while trying to create his own legacy.
Murphy will also executive produce “Beverly Hills Cop” and reprise his role as Axel in the pilot, with the potential to recur on the series if it goes forward. Kevin Pollak and David Denman were recently cast in “Beverly Hill Cop” as well, with Pollak set to play the Beverly Hills Police Department’s in-house attorney, Rodney Daloof and Denman on board as “Brad,” a former baseball player/musician turned detective who may be one of Aaron Foley’s new partners.
“Beverly Hills Cop” is considered to be one of the favorites to make CBS’ fall 2013 schedule, but the network will announce its decision within a few months.
