An X Academy series is rumored to be in development at Marvel Studios. It will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and can potentially lead to an X-Men reboot movie. This comes after recent reports stating that Marvel has paused the development of several of its small-screen projects.
X Academy show rumored to be in development at Marvel Studios
The Hot Mic podcast’s Jeff Sneider and John Rocha recently discussed a new Deadline report that stated Marvel had paused the development of three TV shows that could have eventually premiered on Disney+: Nova, Terror Inc., and Strange Academy. Sneider claimed that when he learned about Strange Academy, a different source told him that while they had heard about an Academy show, it wasn’t Strange Academy, it was X Academy. Sneider said that this source “sort of” told him that X Academy would potentially lead into the X-Men reboot film.
However, this was apparently disputed by someone else, who allegedly said that they would be surprised if Marvel started doing TV shows before the X-Men movie, so it would be a spin-off of the movie instead and would release after it. Sneider added, “Either way, both of them seemed to be of the opinion that there was in fact an X-Men show in the works about X Academy and Young mutants.”
Notably, the Academy X students made their first appearance in the 23rd edition of New X-Men (developed by Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, Mark Brooks, and Paul Pelletier). The original roster comprised the likes of Armor, Anole, the Cuckoo Triplets, and more. These characters were being developed to be part of the main X-Men and even lead it someday. The team went into relative obscurity after the Academy X era ended, but regained prominence following the Fall of X relaunch.
Nevertheless, these characters remain largely unknown to people who are not familiar with X-Men comics, and it will be interesting to see how Marvel explores this aspect of the X-Men lore if they are indeed planning to develop the show.
