Lucasfilm revealed in April 2023 that Dave Filoni would helm a movie that would conclude the inter-connected crossover story of The Mandalorian and its spin-offs, including Ahsoka. However, according to industry scoopers, that project could potentially be turned into a series if the upcoming Star Wars feature, The Mandalorian & Grogu, flops at the box office.
Dave Filoni’s Ahsoka, The Mandalorian and Grogu crossover could become a series
Industry scooper Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK) claims that the Ahsoka crossover would be developed as a movie if The Mandalorian & Grogu becomes successful. If that doesn’t happen, the project will be transformed into a show.
“If the Mando film flops, they’ll reconsider their plans and turn the crossover film into a miniseries,” Richtman mentioned in a new scoop. “Lucasfilm is reportedly going to play it ‘safe’ with their shows moving forward,” he added.
Since the original announcement about the project in April 2023, a lot of things have happened. According to an article published by The Hollywood Reporter that month, the timing of the project would depend upon the future seasons of the projects associated with The Mandalorian. In November 2023, Filoni disclosed that he was now the Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm and would play a more involved role in future Star Wars movies and TV shows. Two months later, Lucasfilm announced the sophomore season of Ashoka and Filoni’s active involvement in it.
As mentioned above, the yet untitled project will serve as the final chapter of the inter-connected story that started with The Mandalorian. It will take place in the New Republic Era and reportedly revolve around the “escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu comes out in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2026, and will continue the story of the titular characters, originally introduced in The Mandalorian. If the movie flops and the untitled crossover is turned into a series, it will likely come out on Disney+, just like other Star Wars shows.
