Hwang Dong-hyuk confirms Squid Game Season 3 will end the show naturally

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently discussed his creative direction for the hit Netflix series, sharing that Season 3 will mark the end of the franchise.

He noted, “I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character. I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.” His statement suggests that Gi-hun’s journey, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, will reach a conclusive arc by the series finale.

Hwang and Lee Jung-jae shared details about the intense second season, set to premiere on December 26. Hwang explained that Season 2 focuses on Gi-hun’s return to the deadly games with a new purpose: to dismantle the system from within. “Throughout seasons two and three, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter). This setup hints at a darker evolution for Gi-hun’s character.

Lee Jung-jae shared his thoughts when he first read the script for the second season. He said, “This is immaculate, there’s absolutely nothing that needs to be changed.” His portrayal of Gi-hun shows a character deeply altered by past traumas from the games. It reflects the emotional and psychological toll of returning to a grim setting.

Netflix announced its decision to conclude Squid Game with Season 3, and Hwang explained why he chose to end the series promptly. He stated that he found a natural ending that encapsulates his intended narrative without the need for further seasons.
