Usain Bolt isn’t getting too carried away with Australia’s domination of the Commonwealth Games, calling the competition in Glasgow “shit”.
A single gold medal separates Australia and England at the top of the Glasgow medal count, but the Commonwealth Games have proven to be no more than a two-horse race with the rest of the 26-nation bill having amassed just six more medals than the two powerhouses nations combined.
Jamaican sprinting champion Usain Bolt is all too weary of the Commonwealth standard, making headlines for labelling the Games as “a bit shit” while also claiming the Olympics “were better”.
Ahead of his run in this weekend’s 4x400m relay, Puma’s 100m king reportedly made the comments outside of the athletes’ village while waiting for his car ahead of a visit with princes William and Harry.
Unfortunately, there isn’t too much Commonwealth Games athletes can take away from their performances in comparison to world standards.
An early season injury prevented Bolt from joining in Jamaican time trials, but that didn’t stop fellow compatriot Kemar Bailey-Cole from claiming the 100 metres event in a flat 10 seconds- a number that would have seen him finish eighth in London.
Aussie hero James Magnussen swept some of the London demons off his back with a couple of gold medal efforts in the pool, but his 100 metre time would have also just accounted for eighth at the 2012 Olympics.
Scotland’s Daniel Wallace wouldn’t have come near London winner Ryan Lochte in the 400m individual medley, winning with a time more than five seconds slower, while men’s triathalon winner Michael Shelley fell more than three minutes behind Stephen Kiprotich’s winning Olympic time of 2:08:01.
One of the rare exceptions has been Australian runner Emma Jackson, who finished fifth in the Glasgow triathlon with a time that would have seen her take home the gold in London.
