A Middle East policy analyst claims Donald Trump had a reason to grin while Iran’s leader railed against America at the UN. In his view, the US president feels confident about where he stands, and Tehran’s complaints did little to shake that.
Expert decodes Donald Trump’s alleged gesture during Iranian President’s UN speech
Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, gave Fox News Digital his read on the moment. He believes Trump barely registered what the Iranian president was saying. “Trump understands he holds the cards, and he may not even have paid much attention to what the Iranian president was saying,” Taleblu said.
Masoud Pezeshkian took the General Assembly podium in New York within a day of Trump’s own address. The Iranian president argued that his country was the target, not the aggressor, and named both the United States and Israel as attackers. “We have only defended ourselves. We are not terrorists,” Pezeshkian claimed.
Taleblu said that framing would have amused Trump. “I’m sure that would have drawn a smirk or a smile or a chuckle from the president’s face, seeing that crassness,” he said. He argued the claim clashed with Iran’s record. The day before, Trump had put the choice to Tehran. “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?” he said on Tuesday.
Away from the podium, envoys were reportedly busy. Trump said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held roughly three hours of talks with Iranian officials at the UN. Witkoff said the sides communicated through go-betweens, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was reported to be part of the Iranian team. The analyst called the two speeches at the 81st session unsurprising, since each government’s stance toward the other has settled into a familiar routine. Both, he said, are trying “to make time a weapon on their side.”
