Blur Look to the Future After Claiming “We’ve Only Just Realised Our Potential”

If you were concerned that Blur may be looking to call it quits after the release of their latest album The Magic Whip, then you’ll be pleased to learn that they believe that they’re only just hitting their stride.

Though the band hasn’t confirmed whether or not they’ll be working on new music in the future, their recent interview with Billboard seems to suggest that they are keen to continue with Blur into the future after The Magic Whip shot to number one in the UK album charts. In the interview, guitarist Graham Coxon said: “It’s weird that we’re between 45 and 50 and we’re only just realising the potential of our relationship musically.

“This process has shown us a lot more than I ever thought it would, what we like about each other and what we both enjoy about the music that we make together… If we had done this 20 years ago, it would have been a lot easier.”

Frontman Damon Albarn added: “The story of this record can be compared to a middle-aged couple, out of the blue, receiving the news that there was going to be a new baby, after the original children had grown up.”

Coxon rejoined Blur in 2008 after departing from the band during the recording of Think Tank. Though the band played a number of live shows, most notably a headline performance at Glastonbury, they held off on releasing a new LP until this year. The Magic Whip has been warmly received by critics and fans alike, with Albarn referring to it as a “miraculous conception”.

Albarn said:  We had no intention of having another kid and then suddenly, almost miraculously, one appeared.”

However, when pushed on whether the band will embark on any other live dates outside of their scheduled festival appearances this year, Albarn said that he was “terminally promiscuous” and therefore may struggle to stick to one gig in favour of continuing to put his finger in many different pies. With a Gorillaz revival reportedly underway and him having only recently embarked upon a solo career, it could lead to Blur’s next album being put on the back-burner, too.
