Those who were teenagers during the visceral, deeply traumatic time in rock that pivoted the grunge era for good may have a hard time this weekend when Brett Morgen’s documentary Montage of Heck premieres. Never-before-heard recordings from Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain‘s archives are making their way into the digital world, tearing open the scars left by a lost antihero.
Listen: Kurt’s Long-Lost Mixtape ‘Montage of Heck’
Below, hear a previously rare, stripped-down cover of the Beatles’ 1964 song “And I Love Her”. The recording isn’t great, but the sound is 94 seconds of a poignant, if not chilling reminder of the man heroin and a shotgun took away from us.
Check out our review of Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and catch it in select theaters on April 24. It will also premiere May 4 on HBO.
