The winner of Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2014 has been announced and 2014 golden boy Chet Faker has nabbed the coveted top spot with “Talk Is Cheap”. Just behind in second place was Canberra duo Peking Duk’s “High” while third place was secured by Hilltop Hoods with “Cosby Sweater”.
As expected, Chet Faker fared very well in the top end of the Hottest 100 and managed to edge-out favourites Peking Duk with his Built On Glass single. Faker also secured back-to-back spots in 7th and 8th place with “Gold” and “1998”, as well as the 21st spot with his Like A Version cover of Sonia Dada’s “(Lover) You Don’t Treat Me No Good”.
Peking Duk were a hot favourite for the top spot, with online bookmakers and new player in the spoilers game Social Hottest 100 incorrectly predicting them to be crowned the Hottest 100 Of 2014 winner with their 2014 hit “High” (ft. Nicole Millar) which was the most played song on triple j in 2014. The Canberra duo made another appearance in the top 10 with “Take Me Over” landing at #5.
Even though the Hilltop Hoods may have had the “most unfortunately named song of 2014”, that didn’t stop “Cosby Sweater” from landing in the top 3. The Hoods also appeared at #36 with “Won’t Let You Down” and as #57 with “Walking Under Stars”.
Iceland’s Asgeir kicked off the top ten with “King And Cross”, followed by Sia’s “Chandelier”. Mark Ronson’s funk-jam “Uptown Funk” (ft. Bruno Mars) placed at #6 and Milky Chance took fourth place with “Stolen Dance”. The German duo also placed at #44 with “Flashed Junk Mind”. Just missing out on the top ten was Listen Out 2014 standout act ZHU with “Faded” coming in at #11.
This year triple j’s Hottest 100 recorded over 2 million votes, the most ever received in the poll’s history. Australian acts performed outstandingly well and were responsible for a record 59 tracks in the top 100. Many of those songs were double or even triple entries for certain locals acts who landed in the top 100 on multiple occasions.
Last year’s Hottest 100 winner Vance Joy had another strong year, landing in the 2014 poll at #13 with “Mess Is Mine”, #93 with “Georgia” and #50 with “First Time”. Blue Mountains trio Thundamentals also made it in three times, as did Gympie hardcore act The Amity Affliction and Sydney’s Sticky Fingers.
Many Australian acts also made their Hottest 100 debut. Meg Mac made her way into the countdown three times with “Roll Up Your Sleeves” at #24, her Like A Version cover of Broods’ “Bridges” at #91 as well as her cover of Bill Withers’ “Grandma’s Hands”, which placed at #46.
Triple j’s 2014 Unearthed High winner Japanese Wallpaper capped off a big year with his song “Between Friends” making it into the top 100 at #97. Melbourne’s The Smith Street Band also made their first ever Hottest 100 appearance at #69 with “Surrender”, while acts like Alison Wonderland, DMA’s and Tkay Maidza also made first time appearances.
Someone who didn’t feature on the countdown was Taylor Swift, despite a controversial social media campaign to get her in there, perpetuated by the hashtag #Tay4Hottest100. Having stayed tight lipped on the issue over the last few weeks, triple j finally revealed today that Taylor Swift will not be included in their Hottest 100 of 2014.
Triple j explained their reasons on a new website, triplejfeed.com, which features just one listicle titled ‘8 Hilarious But Totally True Reasons You Won’t Hear “Shake It Off” In The Hottest 100′. The list is a direct jab at Buzzfeed, who spearheaded the #Tay4Hottest100 campaign.
Other notable entrants in this year’s countdown included Future Islands, Childish Gambino, alt-j, Bluejuice, The Griswolds and Glass Animals.
