Austin City Limits 2014 is in full swing, and Foster The People totally brought it this year at the Texas-based music festival. We got a chance to chill with the band at the relaxing little backstage oasis that was the Samsung Galaxy lounge, and ask them how they approach large-scale events like the one this weekend.
Performing so many shows can be an exhausting process, and one that requires the band to really dial it in in to keep the energy up. With regard to how the group manages to pull off such an energetic show time and time again, singer, guitarist, and keyboard player Mike Foster explained, “At the end of the day, no matter how we feel, I think if we take our eyesight off ourselves and really try to put it on the people, then that really helps to connect to everything and be in the moment again.”
The group also took some time to discuss how they go about keeping a “metal scrapbook” so they can look back and remember all of the numerous shows they’ve performed in such a short span of time. Making each performance a special experience by feeding off the crowd is a major way in which the band keeps from allowing all their shows to all blend together.
With regard to bad press and negative reviews, Foster told us that while he takes the time to read a lot of the feedback that’s out there, he really only gives credence to the well-written content that provides constructive criticism. As for how he feels about the folks out there that just want to give the band a hard time just for the sake of it… well, you’ll just have to watch the full interview from ACL 2014, conducted by CraveOnline’s Johnny Firecloud, below.
