Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon came home to Wisconsin this weekend baring gifts to fans who have been eagerly awaiting a new album since his self-titled, Grammy Award-winner five years ago. Vernon chose his two-day Eaux Claires festival, held in his hometown of Eau Claire, to announce and then perform a new album, 22, A Million, in its entirety (watch fan footage of the whole set below), that was capped off with a song and dance routine with Chance The Rapper (see it here).
Vernon’s deep introspection comes through even in a press release describing his third album, which arrives September 30th, 22, A Million is part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner resolution of maybe never finding that understanding. The album’s 10 poly-fi recordings are a collection of sacred moments, love’s torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard as coincidence. If Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.”
For a clearer sound of one of the new songs, “22 (OVER S∞∞N) [Bob Moose Extended Cab Version]” check out this “lyric video” he released.
