Having already taken over the reins of Avengers 5 and 6, the Russo Brothers are reportedly in the running to helm the much-awaited X-Men reboot. After directing Avengers: Endgame and providing a fitting conclusion to the MCU’s Infinity Saga, Joe and Anthony Russo quietly exited the Marvel setup in pursuit of other ventures. However, they made an unexpected return to the franchise alongside Robert Downey Jr. at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
At the event, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the duo will be coming back to helm the next two Avengers sequels. Nevertheless, per the latest rumors, it seems that the Russos will be extending their stay in the MCU, even after Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Russos rumored to be involved with more projects after Secret Wars
According to accredited internet scooper Daniel Richtman, the Russo Brothers have “already signed a deal” to “oversee additional projects,” including the X-Men reboot, at Marvel after the conclusion of its Multiverse Saga.
However, Richtman’s latest Patreon update failed to confirm if the Russo Brothers will take up the directing responsibilities for the upcoming X-Men project. From the looks of it, an effective course correction of the scattered franchise seems to be the motivation behind re-hiring The Gray Man directors.
The Russo Brothers’ role post-Avengers: Secret Wars may remain under wraps as of now, but Marvel Studios is actively planning to introduce the X-Men into the MCU. In an earlier interview, Feige confirmed that the franchise will transition into the Mutant Saga following the culmination of Avengers 6. “Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men,” Feige stated, adding, “Again, [it’s] one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
While the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Secret Wars is on track to hit theaters on May 7, 2027, the much-discussed X-Men reboot has yet to receive any official update from Marvel.
