If you’re a sane person in the modern world, you likely foster a healthy fear of drone ubiquity. The world is veritably swarming with robot helicopters, controlled from miles away, that are currently spying on you, delivering your Amazon.com packages, and occasionally firing missiles. It won’t be long before drones are stealing our food, vandalizing our cars, and dating our daughters.

For those who see the world’s flock (parcel? Murder? Brood? Covey?) of drones as the latest irrefutable indicator of imminent robot world takeover, a company called OperWorks Engineering has developed a solution. The SkyWall 100 shoulder-mounted bazooka is designed to fire a net around a drone up to 100 meters away. The net will tangle itself around a drone’s helicopter blades, and then deploy a parachute, gently delivering it to the ground.
The SkyWall 100 is not intended, of course, for casual consumer use; the inventors are not here to fulfill your dreams of standing on your porch nailing sky robots. It is intended for security purposes. Drones can attack or spy on public events – such as speeches or concerts – and the SkyWall is meant to take down suspicious spies.
But it’s awfully tempting to save up for one. As drones become more ubiquitous, you can expect to see more and more anti-drone measures being developed as well. We can only hope to stand on the front lines with our net bazookas someday. The SkyWall might make that possible.
