The Microsoft HoloLens will feature have a battery of life up to 5.5 hours, though can drop to 2.5 hours depending upon which tasks the user carries out with it, the company has confirmed.
Microsoft Technical Evangelist Bruce Harris made the admission during an event in Tel Aviv, saying that while the HoloLens can run up to 5.5 hours, when the hardware is strained it can fall to 2.5 hours.
Harris also said that the augmented reality is “totally wireless,” and that it can connect to practically any Wi-Fi and Bluetooth device. In addition, Harris noted that a unique implementation of the HoloLens is that two people using the headset can see the same AR object over the Internet, meaning that they wouldn’t have to be occupying the same room to view an identical image using their respective headsets.
Harris added that the HoloLens’ field-of-view is comparable to a 15-inch monitor held two feet from your face, a limitation that has been employed due to cost and battery life issues. He noted that Microsoft would like to widen the headset’s FOV in the future.
While this may not sound like a particularly lengthy battery life, considering the power of the technology and the fact that the headset isn’t intended for all-day use, it shouldn’t come as much of a shock to those who have been following the hardware’s development. While there still isn’t a confirmed release date for the technology, at least we now have a few more snippets of information regarding Microsoft’s bold venture into the world of high-end AR.
