The Ford Fusion is already one of the automaker’s strongest models, not to mention one of the top five selling consumer sedans on the market.
At NAIAS 2016, Ford announced plans to update the popular line with four new trims — a Sport, the high end Platinum, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. All three will hit the market by the middle of the coming year.
The Fusion V6 Sport immediately becomes the top performance entry for the Fusion and aspires to be the top performing option in the popular consumer sedan class. It employs a twin-turbocharged, 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 engine that serves up an estimated 325 horsepower. Those numbers are not confirmed yet, but the actual data will be pinned down once it hits showrooms. As listed here, the engine size and horsepower match up reasonably well with entry level Mustangs.
Ford is quick to point out that their new Fusion Sport will offer almost 50 more horsepower than the 3.5 liter V6 engines offered by rivals Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The Fusion Hybrid will utilize Ford’s gas/electric engine, while the Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid. Ford will employ new hybrid software in both vehicles to improve and refine its performance for extended range and fuel economy.
Finally, the Fusion Platinum becomes the halo trim for the model. The midsize sedan will use a 2.0 liter EcoBoost and all-wheel drive for best performance in all driving conditions. However, Ford is quick to point to the car’s interior as the model’s most significant upgrade. New instrumentation and door trim panels use “Cocoa Leather,” while a hand-wrapped steering prefers Venetian leather.
Outside, a unique grille (unless you design exteriors for Aston Martin) is polished off with Magnetic paint. Finally, 19 inch wheels smooth out the ride.
