Miami Beach is divine with its lush beaches and tropical vibes, it’s warm weather the perfect balm for frazzled nerves. While most everything that happens during Art Week Miami are located indoors, Crave spotlights some of the key events that will be happening outdoors.

Wynwood Walls
In 2009, the late Tony Goldman struck upon an idea: to revitalize the warehouse district of Wynwood using massive murals that would go on to become one of the greatest public art venues in the world. Goldman had a simple idea: “Wynwood’s large stock of warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in one place.”
Goldman’s commitment to graffiti and street art, transformed the scene, bringing some of the finest artists from around the world including legends like COCO 144, FUTURA 2000, and Kenny Scharf alongside contemporary figures like Invader, Fafi, and Maya Hayuk. Since its inception, the Wynwood Walls program has seen over 50 artists representing 16 countries and have covered over 80,000 square feet of walls and has maintained its buzz as the must-see exhibition during Art Week Miami, which is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, December 3 at the W South Beach, hosted by the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express as an exclusive Card Member event featuring Crave fave John “CRASH” Matos will be painting a custom design mural poolside featuring a vivid flamingo motif against a dark backdrop, evoking the neon lights of the city’s night scene, inspired by 1940s and ‘50s era Miami. Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest (whose comeback album debuted at No. 1 upon release last week) will be spinning a live DJ set at the event, while we pour one out in memory of ATCQ member Malick “Phife Dawg,” Taylor who died earlier this year.

The Film Sector at Soundscape Park
Organized in association with David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and London’s Artprojx, the Film sector presents a dynamic program of films. Outdoor screenings take place at SoundScape Park, where works are shown on the 7,000-square-foot projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center; and inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. Keep an eye out for new films by Kim Gordon, Christian Marclay, Martin Creed, Rodney Graham, Alex Prager, Rita Ackermann, DJ Ain Bailey, and Crave fave Rashid Johnson.

The Public Sector at Collins Park
Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator of the Public Art Fund, New York, returns to curate the Public sector of Art Basel in Miami Beach at Collins Park. The theme “Ground Control,” is very topical, and will feature over 20 site-specific works by established and emerging artists from 10 countries including Crave fave Sol LeWitt, Magdalena Abakanowicz, David Adamo, Jean-Marie Appriou, Yoan Capote, and Tony Matelli, among others. We are particularly moved by Capote’s “Naturaleza Urbana” (2012), which speaks to the clash between man and nature, and their inherent and inescapable relationship to each other.

The Beach
Most of us do not have daily access to the beach, to the warm tropical waters that wash against the shore every day. Perhaps there’s nothing quite as refreshing as taking a moment to get away from it all, to pull up a chaise lounge and layout under the gentle rays of the Florida sun. Miami Beach became a celebrated resort town for its luxurious coastline, for its balmy temperature oh-so-inviting. With a week of art, parties, and events, the best restorative is undoubtedly a trip to the beach.
Miss Rosen is a New York-based writer, curator, and brand strategist. There is nothing she adores so much as photography and books. A small part of her wishes she had a proper library, like in the game of Clue. Then she could blaze and write soliloquies to her in and out of print loves.
