I am pretty pleased to report that I’ve been on the Brixton train for a long time. Years and years ago I stumbled upon a straw fedora that I had to have, and even though it was definitely a size too big, being the only one the shop had, I bought what was the classic Castor and wore it to the tune of many compliments.
It was such a fun surprise when I took a job at Transworld Media and found that, what I thought was a fairly underground hat company, was well known amidst the cubicles belonging to the team managing the publications and websites of fan favorites like Transworld Skateboarding, Snowboarding and Surf (RIP). Turns out, there was a reason.
Brixton was founded by former TWS employee David Stoddard in 2009, leaving the mag to create the label. While I’m sure his likable personality was missed around the office, his products were definitely well-worn among his former colleagues. Now 7 years later, Brixton has stood the test of some rough times. (When the economy tanked, I can’t imagine it being an easy time to push $15 beanies.) But instead of crumbling under pressure, Brixton has stayed consistent to their understated style and high quality products, continually pushing the line bigger and better by branching out from hats to tees, sweatshirts, a comprehensive women’s line and increasingly impressive outerwear.
Even though they’re based in Southern California, Brixton has something for the rest of us about to freeze our bottoms off around the country. And at least we’ll look good doing it.
