How to Upgrade to Apple’s OS X El Capitan Today

Apple is officially releasing its new Mac operating system today, and assuming your Mac/MacBook is compatible, you’ll be able to download it and enjoy the slew of new features that OS X El Capitan.

While Apple hasn’t announced an official time for the launch of its new OS X, you should keep checking your computer’s App Store in order to get your hands on it. When it eventually becomes available, you’ll be able to download the launcher from the App Store, which is 6GB in size, follow its instructions and you’ll be good to go. You can find the launcher in the Updates tab in the App Store.

OS X will be available on the following Apple platforms, so be sure to check whether you’re able to make the upgrade before it goes live:

  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later), (12-inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)

In order to get the upgrade you’ll also be required to be running the Snow Leopard or a later OS X, as only they feature the App Store that is required in order to download the launcher. 

OS X 10.11 El Capitan is faster than previous Apple Mac operating systems, with graphics rendering speeds increased by 50% and many apps opening up to 1.4 times faster, according to Apple. Improvements have also been made to Spotlight and Mission Control, with Apple also introducing a split-screen view that allows two apps to be used simultaneously, along with the debut of pinned tabs for Safari.
