Travel: Have You Heard the One about LA’s Farmer’s Daughter?

If ever a hotel knew where it was and realized what it needed to be, it’s the Farmer’s Daughter in Los Angeles.

The joint takes its name from the iconic LA landmark, the Farmer’s Market at Third and Fairfax. An expertly renovated and redesigned motor lodge of the past, The Farmer’s Daughter is now a sharp, faux-country themed hotel offering easy access to all of West LA’s attractions or adequate peace and quiet to get away from them. It’s entirely up to the guest.

The property sits in two halves with a valet parking lot in between them. The north side includes guest rooms centered on the pool, the front desk, the boutique shop and the hotel bar and restaurant. The south half is mainly guest rooms. There’s 24 hour front desk and concierge service, along with parking valet free for all guests.

The hotel’s redesign expertly split the different between modern rustic and boutique artisan. The rooms are modestly, but comfortably furnished with all of the necessary amenities — including free wifi, rain shower heads, HDTV and locally sourced mini bar. There is no fitness center, however. The hotel does offer discounted use of a nearby public gym, but you might want to get your exercise walking.

Each guest room also features individual artwork poking fun at the idea that you’re staying in a country hotel set in the middle of one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world.

The hotel’s dining offering is Tart. That’s the name of the restaurant and not a commentary on its service. Though keeping the vibe as trendy as any Los Angeles night spot must be, Tart’s menu raises an eyebrow at the hotel’s “little bit country” identity with a menu full of modern takes on comfort food. I recommend the Chicken n’ Dumplings. You can’t go wrong.

Of course, the primary strength of the Farmer’s Daughter is the hotel’s location. In addition to the Farmer’s Market across the street (…Think LA’s version of Covent Garden…), there’s also The Grove – one of the city’s top outdoor malls. CBS Studios is also just across Fairfax, making the hotel a favorite spot for would-be contestants for The Price is Right.

You’re a short cab ride or bus hop from Beverly Hills, Hollywood, West Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard. If you can handle a little more traffic, you’re a half hour from the studio tours of Culver City, the Santa Monica Pier, Venice and the ocean.

There’s so many classic LA tourist cites to hit within easy range of the Farmer’s Daughter that you’d be a fool to spend too much time in the hotel. Fortunately, the minds behind the venue put enough thought and work into its re-creation that you’ll be perfectly comfortable when you head back to your accommodation to wash the Los Angeles dust off your shoes.
