Considering that front-facing cameras are now used almost as much as their rear-facing counterparts, it’s irritating that there aren’t many smartphones that provide us with a truly impressive outlet with which we can exercise our narcissistic tendencies. But now Sony has introduced its new mid-range devices, the Xperia M5, that raises the bar when it comes to smartphones designed for selfies.
The Sony Xperia M5 boasts a 13-megapixel front-facing camera, an amount that we’ve thus far only really seen on the HTC Desire Eye. Its rear-facing camera is similarly impressive, featuring an 21.5-megapixel Exmoor RS sensor that can shoot 4K video with Hybrid AF and 5X clear image zoom. It’s also set to run smoothly with its 2GHz MediaTek X10 processor and 3GB of RAM, and its clear 5-inch 1080p display is a bonus for a mid-range smartphone.

The Xperia M5 was announced alongside the Xperia C5 Ultra, a similar device that also features a 13-megapixel front-facing camera, though its rear-facing camera is also 13 MP. However, its 1080p display is larger, clocking in at 6 inches.

Both devices feature a decent 2,600mAh battery, which Sony claims is good for two days use, and they will both run Android 5.0 Lollipop. Tony McNulty, VP of Value Category Business Management at Sony Mobile Communications said: “We understand that camera capabilities are important to smartphone users, so we ensured that Sony’s existing camera brilliance was once again surpassed in the new Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 without compromising on other features across design and performance.”

It remains to be seen whether or not the Xperia M5 and C5 Ultra’s emphasis upon selfies will help the company’s dwindling smartphone division turn their fortunes around, but hopefully it will at least help to set a precedent when it comes to front-facing cameras, and soon we’ll no longer have to make do with lackluster 5-megapixel offerings.
