CES 2015: Apple Reveals How Your Smart Home Will Talk to Siri with HomeKit

The very first products to use Apple’s HomeKit platform were unveiled at CES 2015, revealing how the smart homes of the future will talk to Siri in order to take control of the household.

Appliances that will work with iOS and Siri include iDevices’ Switch and iHome’s SmartPlug, which can both be controlled either with apps or with help from Siri. Both pieces of tech grant easy home-management powers to their user, allowing them to turn off the appliances that they are connected to regardless of whether they’re at home or not.

iDevice’s Switch can control the lighting of your home using your iPhone.

For the more security-focused consumer there’s also the Schlage Sense Bluetooth Deadbolt, a device which will give any budding burglars a headache if they plan on breaking into your smart home. The deadlock can be activated if in range with your smartphone, though it also features a keypad for an added degree of security. It’s essentially a lock that doesn’t require a key, and is an essential addition to any smart home and perhaps the most impressive piece of tech in the HomeKit range thus far.

The Switch and SmartPlug will be available at some point during the first half of 2015 for around $50, while the Sense Deadbolt is expected to retail for between $200 and $300. The devices are all part of the first wave of tech available for Apple’s HomeKit platform, a big part of the tech giant’s iOS 8 update.
