22-year-old student Dominique Harris-Bentzen is raising money for a homeless man after he gave her £3 for a taxi ride home.

The man, named Robbie, was identified on Facebook after Dominique posted a statement about his act of good will, with many stating that they had also been helped out by him during a time of need. Many said that he had offered them his scarf when they were stuck out in the cold, or had given them his change when they found themselves in a similar situation to Dominique. Now the university student and Miss Preston finalist is set to sleep rough for 24 hours alongside Robbie, in order to raise money to help him get back on his feet.
Dominique, who said that Robbie “insisted” she took the money to pay for a taxi in order to ensure she got home safe, already has the backing of a number of celebrities, with Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown sharing his support of her via Twitter.
She said: “He has been homeless for seven months through no fault of his own and he can’t get work due to having no address, and I simply can’t just give him the money, I have to go through the right channels. So I will be spending 24 hours through the day and night as a homeless person to understand the difficulties they face each day.”
Dominique has set up a Go Get Funding campaign titled “Help Robbie, Preston’s Homeless Hero” in order to help him get enough money to rent a flat so that he can then look for employment. At the time of this writing, the campaign has raised nearly £11,800 of its £12,000 goal, with 24 hours left to go.
On the campaign’s page, Dominique writes: “Please sponsor me £3 – as Robbie attempted to give me his only £3 – in the hope of collecting enough to get Robbie a flat deposit.
“Together our small act of kindness can change someone’s life this Christmas and finally get him off the streets safe and warm. Please share with your friends and family. Thank you.”
