Take One for the Team and Take Off That Jersey

Wearing a sports jersey out is the equivalent of cursing in front of your grandmother. It’s just not right.

We know your favorite sports team is superior to all other teams in the universe. That message became certain the first three hundred fifty times you wore the jersey . . . and the cap. We get it.

Now get this: unless you’re sitting on a couch watching a game; at a field playing in a game; or at a bar, with your buddies, betting on a game, there’s really no excuse to trot out the sports jersey. Especially if you’re out to dinner, at the movies or (choke) on a date.

So get a glove and get in the fashion game. Realize your Little League days are D.O.N.E. Because the truth is, there’s no way you can play the romance field and expect to score with a girl if you’re sporting a jersey. This goes double for a shirt with a name on the back. Make that triple. Wearing another grown man’s name on the back of your shirt is not OK if you’re older than 14. Wanna bet?

Now before you go all Chris Hoover on us, it’s important to know that we’re game for you supporting your favorite team. We’re just pointing out that there are fresher ways to represent, thanks to low- and high-end fashion designers who have taken a fresh twist on the sucky sports shirt. Tightened silhouettes give way to a nostalgic feel with vintage-inspired graphics, super soft fabrics and cool conversation starters. You know – shirts that show your dedication . . . instead of your crazy.

You’ll always score with a company like One 10 Threads. They feature sweatshop-free apparel (major bonus points) made in the USA with cool slogans and graphics. Your friends won’t give you any heat for wearing this Texas Tech Raiders tee. In addition, The Original Retro Brand evens out the score with hundreds of well-fitted shirts that combine the cool looks of classic and modern sports logos. You’ll feel like a king in this Montreal Royals tee.

Everyone will slow down to check out your vintage-inspired Indianapolis 500 tee offered by Homage, and there won’t be any sour faces around this Sweetness tee featuring NFL player, Walter Payton. And once you trade in that boxy jersey for something of a slimmer style, you’ll automatically feel like a champion — especially if you sport anything Chicago Giants or this Hall of Famer Ricky Henderson tee.

So there you have it. Life is going to throw you some fashion curve balls . . . we’re just here to make sure you don’t get beamed. Go ahead and tout your favorite team, just remember to pass on the polyester.

And one final note: this is written for the team-obsessed guy who throws on a jersey and walks out the door. If you tuck in your jersey and top it off with a belt, you’re in a whole other category. And we don’t have advice for that.
