Mazda marched out several updated and improved models at the LA Auto Show, but the big news was the arrival of an entirely new vehicle for its line — the CX-3.
Tucking in as a smaller, more entry level crossover option in front of the CX-5 and top of the line CX-9, the CX-3 is aimed at the small, urban SUV class — a shot across the bow of the Ford Escape, the Toyota 4Runner or the Honda CR-V. In keeping with the rest of the Mazda line, the new crossover was designed with the company’s driver-friendly Kodo design language for maximum on-road pleasure. When the CX-3 arrives, it will offer up a Mazda SKYACTIV-G 2.0 liter gasoline engine. There will also be a SKYACTIV-D 1.5 liter clean diesel engine in other countries because Americans evidently live in perpetual fear of anything diesel.

For the uninitiated, SKYACTIV is Mazda’s answer to hybrids and electric cars. The science uses high compression engines and lighter material to squeeze consistently more than 35 mpg out of otherwise standard gas engines. Aside from the engines, the CX-3 will offer Mazda’s latest active, passive and in-car-infotainment technologies, including Mazda Connect and i-ACTIVSENSE safety features.
In keeping with LA Auto Show SOP, Mazda didn’t specifically price point or for sale dates, but it’s set to arrive sometime in the summer of 2015.
Aside from the new CX-3, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata was on display. I’ve seen that car up close and personal before, but I haven’t yet had the opportunity to drive it. It promises to be a load of fun when that time comes.
The other major reveal was the updated 2016 Mazda 6. That car did a lot of damage on the “Car of the Year” lists last year, so Mazda doesn’t want to fix what definitely is not broken. So, with some subtle exterior enhancements like available 19″ wheel with high-gloss finishes, Mazda focused on updating the car’s transmission and braking systems.
