The Gentlemen’s Expo has come and gone for another year, and I can say that surprisingly enough, I actually have learned a great deal about what it means to be a gentleman, or at least one type of gentleman.
A true gentleman balances work and play in his life. Sometimes the best thing you can do is get some of your friends over and play Goldeneye on the N64, sometimes you need to balance your budget, and sometimes you need to play paintball on a recreated set of Tropic Thunder.
Gentlemen should have a large pallet and a thirst for trying new things like meats, beers, colognes, clothes, and music. You should always be looking to expand on what you know, becoming knowledgeable in a number of subjects. Gentlemen also know the importance of good style, as well as good hygiene. There is a very fine line between smelling good and smelling. Also, maintaining a beard is as difficult has taking care of most pets.
The strongest lesson I learned from this weekend is that a gentleman does not favour the past over the future, or vice versa. A true gentleman sees the importance of the past, while keeping his eye on the future. This could be seen at the Expo purely by the array of exhibitors and vendors, a strong foot was found both in the past and future. Even with all the tech advances that were on display from audio to cooking to cars, they were placed beside woodworking, home brewing kits and some of the finest tailors and barbers in Toronto. Retaining the tools and skills of the past, while keeping an eye towards innovation is what really makes the man.
Also, even though it seems like a good idea at the time, eating nothing but BBQ all weekend may taste great, but it’ll wreck havoc on your digestive system.
