With seemingly every tech service being hacked these days, reports began circulating that Dropbox had been compromised. However, Dropbox is claiming that these reports are untrue and that users’ information, files and photos are safe.

In a post titled “Dropbox wasn’t hacked,” Dropbox security Anton Mityagin writes: “Recent news articles claiming that Dropbox was hacked aren’t true. Your stuff is safe. The usernames and passwords referenced in these articles were stolen from unrelated services, not Dropbox. Attackers then used these stolen credentials to try to log in to sites across the internet, including Dropbox. We have measures in place to detect suspicious login activity and we automatically reset passwords when it happens.”
In an update to the post, Mityagin continued: “A subsequent list of usernames and passwords has been posted online. We’ve checked and these are not associated with Dropbox accounts.”
So it looks like a list of usernames and passwords have been obtained from somewhere, though it’s still yet to be revealed what service these accounts are linked with. Fortunately for Dropbox users, their storage system is safe from harm.
