Snapchat has responded to naked photos of users taken using the app being leaked yesterday (October 9th), though has stated that it isn’t to blame for the leaks.

Naked images of Snapchat users were posted to image board 4chan, similar to the recent mass celebrity nude photos leak that took place last month. However, Snapchat was quick to distance itself from any wrongdoing, releasing a statement on Twitter reading: “We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks.”
The statement continued: “Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our ToU.”
The leak was dubbed “The Snappening,” similar to “The Fappening” name that was given to describe the celebrity leaks, which involved the likes of Kaley Cuoco, Rihanna, Kate Upton, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lawrence.
Snapchat’s insistence that its servers remain untouched is at least heartening for those who don’t use third-party apps, but it could be considered something of a slap in the face that the company has so readily thrown its users under the bus and blamed them for their own images being leaked.
While it’s easy to say that no one should be using an app such as Snapchat to take explicit photos of themselves anyway (especially considering just how often nude Snapchat photos surface on the Internet), but it’s not the users who are to blame for this kind of incident… though according to Snapchat, it’s not their fault either. Regardless, we’re not sure that this statement will be appreciated by their users who have naked photos of themselves swimming around on the ‘net right now.
