Netflix Sent Cease and Desist from Verizon for Low-Quality Streaming Claims

Netflix has been sent a cease and desist order from Verizon, after the streaming service blamed the network for its poor quality service.

Netflix had been sending messages to some users informing them that it was their Internet service provider’s fault that they were having issues with streaming. The message, which was being trialed by Netflix and hadn’t yet made its way to all users, inevitably raised the ire of Verizon, who refuted the claims that the ISP was to blame for streaming problems. Verizon’s cease and desist order reads: “There is no basis for Netflix to assert that issues with respect to playback of any particular video session are attributable solely to the Verizon network.”

Verizon also claims that Netflix has been “inaccurate” and “misleading” with its blaming of the ISP for customers’ streaming issues, along with branding the message Netflix has sent out to its users as a “PR stunt.”

The court order also points to other factors that could slow down streaming performance, stating: “As Netflix knows, there are many different factors that can affect traffic on the internet, including choices by Netflix in how to connect to its customers and deliver content to them, interconnection between multiple networks, and consumer in-home issues such as in-home wiring, Wi-Fi, and device settings and capabilities.”
