Google Hires Just 2% Black People, Shocking Diversity Report Reveals

Google has admitted that the company has got some pretty huge diversity issues, after its first diversity report indicated that its workforce is composed of just 2% black people and 30% females.

The information Google collated in the diversity report, which contains data recorded in January 2014, shows that there is a large split in the number of men Google hires when compared with females, and that its racial diversity is also incredibly unbalanced.

61% of Google employees are white, while on the opposite end of the spectrum only 2% of Google employees are black. You can view the data below.

However, Google has said that it is disclosing these results to the general public so that it can begin to build a more diverse workforce. In a company statement, Google said: “We’re not where we want to be when it comes to diversity. And it is hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts.

“All of our efforts, including going public with these numbers, are designed to help us recruit and develop the world’s most talented and diverse people.”

The company also notes that “having a diversity of perspectives leads to better decision-making, more relevant products, and makes work a whole lot more interesting.”

Hopefully the publicizing of this information leads to Google being more diverse with the hiring of its staff in the future.
