Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week Works Out Down Under

It may not be one of the highest profile fashion week events, at least not yet. But, Mercedes Benz Australia Fashion Week is well on its way.

As always, there were many women’s fashion designers presenting throughout the week. But, what about menswear? To be honest, there were few — and that may be because most Aussie men are either in surf wear or suits seemingly on a regular basis. Still, there were two brands who just may change the local males perspective on everyday wear.

Strateus Carlucci definitely has more of a European fashion look and feel. This brand manufactures a combination of men’s and women’s fashion, both reading very cohesively making a bold, interestedly chic statement.

The designs are clean and simple yet the brand itself is about “staying true to its aesthetic, which is a fine balance between sharp, architectural construction and tailoring, combined with dark moods and conceptual themes,” as per the designer himself. The 2015 Spring/Summer collection is brilliantly executed. Check it out here.

Another refreshing surprise in “Australian Menswear” was Song for the Mute. For decades, fashion and music have gone hand in hand, but what’s great is to see an American musician walking in an Australian fashion show. Lupe Fiasco made his debut on the runway during this show, flying into Sydney earlier this week. He’s been friends with the designers, Melvin Tanaya and Lyna Ty, for more than three years after having met them in Harrods while on a shopping trip. His anticipated appearance in the show brought a bit of excitement.

Already showing their collection to buyers in Paris, China and Hong Kong, Song for the Mute is quite luxurious. Using the finest virgin wool blends, mohair, alpaca and resin coating on their jackets, coats and bombers, knitwear and pants, it’s alternative street wear at its finest.
