Netherlands’ Glow-in-the-Dark Roads Make Driving Look Like an 80s Video Game

Glow-in-the-dark roads have made their debut in Netherlands, and we all need to pack our bags and go there right away because these things look AWESOME.

The glow-in-the-dark road markings have been laid out on a 500m stretch of highway in the Netherlands, replacing the streetlights that were there initially.

The road markings were developed by Studio Roosegarde, with Dan Roosegarde, the studio’s founder and lead designer, saying of the project: “One day I was sitting in my car in the Netherlands, and I was amazed by these roads we spend millions on but no one seems to care what they look like and how they behave. I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us.”

Speaking to Wired.co.uk, Roosegarde said that the markings were “almost radioactive” due to their extreme luminescence, with them being created using a photo-luminescent powder that is blended into the road paint. The marking appear along the N329 highway in Oss.
