Here’s When Two Winter Storms Are Expected to Come This Week

Early models project that two winter storms are projected to arrive this week. While there will be several snow storms coming over the next few days on Monday, February 6, and Tuesday, February 7, two more severe winter storms will likely impact the eastern United States. A mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is expected to fall in the middle of the week from the Midwest to the East Coast and then again during the weekend. Like our forecast from last week, these systems would be called Winter Storm Freya and Garnett by The Weather Channel. Here’s when the next winter storm is forecast to hit the US within the week.

When is the upcoming winter storm arriving?

The first upcoming winter storm, Freya, is expected to arrive on Wednesday while the second, Garnett, is projected to come on Saturday.

This is based on the American GPS model as analyzed by Max Schuster, who is known for his channel Max Velocity on YouTube. He explains that an atmospheric river, which is common in the winter season, coming east over California will be responsible for snow to fall in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho from Monday and Wednesday. Then by Wednesday afternoon, the model shows that the energy from this river culminating into a winter storm by Wednesday afternoon with precipitation over the Ohio Valley, including Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

By Thursday, this winter storm will combine with a system dropping snow in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. This will create a broad storm that is expected to bring a lot of rain, freezing rain, and snow as it moves toward the East Coast and mainly New England on Thursday. Most of the snow, about one to five inches, will be concentrated in the northernmost states, above Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.

The second winter storm is more difficult to predict since it’s about five days away, but it’s projected that it will form much like Freya will, gathering energy from the atmospheric river and forming heavy storm clouds over the Midwest by some time on Saturday. This system is expected to move at a brisker pace to the east than Freya, so it shouldn’t have as much of an impact when it comes to rainfall and snowfall.
