Tropical Storm Francine is forecast to transform into a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and make landfall in the United States on Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center has issued a series of hurricane and storm surge warnings for Louisiana and parts of Upper Texas.
ABC News reported that Francine is expected to arrive in the US as a Category 2 storm with 100 mph winds in southwestern Louisiana. The storm is forecast to bring rainfall from northeastern Mexico through Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Some of the affected in the storm’s path are expected to see 12 inches of rain, while others may get 4 to 8 inches.
Storm Francine could turn into a hurricane before US landfall
The National Hurricane Center shared the latest update on Tropical Storm Francine on September 10 at 4 a.m. CDT. The weather officials have urged people to brace for the possible effects. The statement noted, “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion today.” It further added that the “tropical storm conditions are expected to begin on Wednesday.”
Storm Francine affected areas: The hurricane warning is in effect for portions of southern Louisiana that may face “damaging and life-threatening hurricane-force winds.” Furthermore, Storm Francine is expected to bring heavy rainfall, with the risk of considerable flash flooding for much of Louisiana and Mississippi through Thursday. Flash and urban flooding will likely occur in portions of northeast Mexico and far southern Texas on Wednesday night into Friday morning and in the mid-South on Wednesday night into Friday morning.
Besides the weather officials’ warnings, Governor Jeff Landry has also urged Louisianans to get their “game plan in place, monitor the news, & take advice from local officials.” Per NBC News, Cameron Parish has been subject to a mandatory evacuation order. Meanwhile, Grand Isle has been issued a mandatory evacuation order for RVs and campers and a voluntary evacuation order for residents. Pass Christian Harbor has also been strongly advised to be evacuated.
