What You’ll Need

  • Dishwasher
  • Dirty silverware
  • Aluminum foil
  • Dishwasher detergent

First, start this hack by making sure your dishes and silverware are correctly loaded into the machine. You’ll also want to check and make sure there isn’t any food at the bottom of the dishwasher. Next, take out your aluminum and roll it into a tiny ball. Place that ball with the silverware. Finally, once that’s taken care of, add your dishwashing detergent of choice and turn on the dishwasher like normal.

By the end of their washing cycle, your silverware will appear brand new and shiny. However, this hack isn’t a miracle. It’s just a chemical reaction between the aluminum foil and the dishwashing detergent you use. Most dishwasher tablets are formulated similarly to baking soda. This lifts the silver sulfide (aka tarnish) off your utensils. Best of all, you can use an old piece of aluminum foil to make this hack work, and then keep on using it. That’s what makes this our favorite, sustainable hack that improves your life with almost zero effort or changes to your routine.
