Jimmy John’s Launches Sandwich in the Metaverse (But Can We Eat It IRL?)

For those who still don’t know, the metaverse is an immersive virtual world that you can enter using virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. People play games, shop, and even live virtual lives in the metaverse. So, it only makes sense that chain restaurants would enter the metaverse to get users to help with new products. Chipotle had metaverse users work in a virtual kitchen for National Burrito Day and now sandwich chain Jimmy John’s is looking to the virtual world for help in creating a new sandwich.

The new, interactive experience was launched on the platform Decentraland on May 17 and ended on May 20. In it, the folks at Jimmy John’s asked users to create their own sandwiches. Fans of Jimmy John’s voted for the best sandwich and the winner will actually be created and sold in real life at the chain’s stores.

If anyone wanted to be part of this, they simply entered the game and chose between various breads, meats, cheese, toppings, condiments, vegetables, and even secret ingredients. They customized their sandwiches and submitted them by May 20. While we don’t know what the winning sandwich consists of yet, we do know it will only be available for pick up and deliver to the first 100 customers from May 31 to June 3 at the Jimmy John’s stores in Nashville and Chicago.

So, if trying a sandwich created in the metaverse is something that interests you, you better road trip to one of these cities. Otherwise, you can just go to any Jimmy John’s, Subway, or any other sandwich shop and have any other sandwich. That’s what we’d do. Also, when we mean go to Jimmy John’s, we mean in the real world. Put down that headset and go outside once in a while. It’s a lot more fun than sitting in a dark basement pretending you’re somewhere else. Trust us.
