McDonald’s Selling Soapiest Sundae of All Time With an Infamous Herb We Never Asked For

There might be no more divisive herb than cilantro. It’s not like parsley, basil, or even rosemary. Either you absolutely hate it or you love it. Either it tastes earthy and delicious and is the perfect complimentary flavor to spicy dishes or it tastes like you shoved a bar of soap into your mouth and took a big, squishy bite. There’s no in-between. Either it tastes great, or it tastes like you added a few squirts of hand soap to your favorite food. This is why we were so surprised to hear that McDonald’s China thought that it was a great base for an ice cream sundae.

We like to keep an eye on what popular fast-food chains are serving in other countries because now and then something pops up that we hope will one day be available here. This definitely isn’t one of them.

Even if you enjoy the taste of cilantro, you likely use it sparingly in your favorite Mexican or other types of spicy dishes. You don’t dump half the container onto your nachos or burrito bowl. It would overpower it with its aggressive, soapy flavor. Did we mention we don’t like the flavor of cilantro at all?

Apparently, the folks at McDonald’s China completely disagreed with us because this ice cream sundae featuring vanilla soft serve, a cilantro sauce, and a healthy sprinkle of cilantro leaves was available from February 21 to February 25.

While we don’t know how popular this sundae was, we can only imagine what the folks at McDonald’s China haven’t launched if this strange dessert item made the cut. What’s next, a fermented fish sundae or dirt-covered French fries?
