Before the Madden phenomenon and subsequent obsession, there was another sports video game series that featured NBA players that everyone in the ‘90s was completely obsessed with. Of course, we’re talking about NBA Jam. This iconic two-on-two basketball game first launched in 1993 and was hogged at arcades and on home Nintendo consoles alike. While you could play as some of the game’s best players, it was the extras that made this game awesome. It featured memorable catchphrases like “razzle-dazzle” and “he’s on fire” and of course, like all great things from the 90s, it’s back. But, not on video game consoles. No, it’s back on beer cans.
To celebrate the NBA’s 75th anniversary during NBA All-Star 2022, Michelob Ultra is partnering with NBA Jam to create cans featuring pixelated players and famous phrases like “He’s on Fire”, “Boom Shakalaka”, and “From Downtown”.
“There is something special about NBA JAM and the power it had to bring real joy to so many people over the years,” NBA legend James Worthy said in a press release. “I’m excited that Michelob ULTRA is giving me the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with fellow legendary players and fans.”
Sadly, if you want to get your hands on one of these limited-edition cans, you’ll have to find yourself in Ohio. That’s because, to celebrate all-star weekend, they’re only available at select bars in Cleveland, at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, and an on-site bar called Boom Shaka Laka’s during NBA All-Star 2022.
