According to the Daily Mail, a senior NASA engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston responsible for training the next batch of astronauts says the first human being to walk on Mars should be a woman.
“I think the first person on Mars should be a woman,” Allyson McIntyre said. “My center director is a woman, my former division chief is a woman, we have female astronauts, but we haven’t put a woman on the moon yet.”
12 men walked on the moon courtesy of the Apollo missions from 1969 to 1972, and while we haven’t been back to the moon since (or ever if you ask some people) to allow a woman to have the same opportunity, the talk of sending humans to Mars in the near future has really heated up over the past few years, allowing for the possibility of a woman stepping foot on the Red Planet before a man does this time around.

In the meantime, there’s that whole “we currently can’t get out of low Earth orbit right now because of the Van Allen radiation belt” thing that’ll have to be dealt with first, so until they figure out how to do that, there’s no reason to get into a heated debate about it, guys.
