Where else can you find the Jean-Michel Basquiat sleeve for K-Rob vs. Rammellzee’s legendary Hip Hop cut “Beat Bop” hanging on the wall like a work of art in the very same building where Jean-Michel’s original paintings once hung during his lifetime? The NY Art Book Fair, naturally.

Printed Matter’s famed book festival returns to MoMA PS1 this weekend, and it will literally take your breath away, with a line up of more than 370 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions, and independent publishers from 28 countries around the globe. The fair, which runs through 9pm this evening and tomorrow, September 24, from 11am–7pm, is a phenomenal opportunity to catch up with your faves and check out the latest happenings.

The NY Art Book Fair covers all price points, whether you wish to pay what you want for the phenomenal zines by Research and Destroy New York City or you have 5Gs to pony up for a David Hammons original painting of Michael Stewart, at the Printed Matter Rare and Out of Print booth.
Among the exhibitors are Crave faves Anthology Editions, Aperture Foundation, ARTBOOK/D.A.P., Cheim & Read, Dashwood Books, Edition Patrick Frey, Gagosian, Guerrilla Girls, Hamburger Eyes, The Hole, Little Big Man Books, Sean Maung, PogoBooks, Spector Books, TBW Books, Trolley Books, True Laurels, Yale University Press, and David Zwirner Books.

The fair is free and open to the public — but you are welcome to make a donation to the cause, which is host to not only table after table of inspiring art and literary titles, but also a series of artist talks and special events in The Classroom. Not to be missed this weekend are:
Saturday, September 23 from 12:00 – 1:00pm
Under the Radar: Underground Zines and Self-Publications 1965 – 1975, with Tania Prill
Tania Prill, Swiss graphic designer and co-editor of the book Under the Radar: Underground Zines and Self-Publications will introduce the audience into the world of hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing of the mid-1960s when small, low-cost print runs with their unique aesthetic were developed: using wild mock-ups, “messianic amateurs” combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. Presented by Spector Books.
Saturday, September 23 from 6:00 – 7:00pm
Shade the King by Rindon Johnson
A reading to launch Shade the King, a paperback collection of poems by Rindon Johnson with illustrations by Ser Serpas, published by Capricious. Readings from Rindon Johnson, Ser Serpas, Shiv Kotecha and Diamond Stingily, with conversation to follow.
Sunday, September 24 from 3:00 – 4:00pm
Starving Artists Cookbook, Paul Lamarre and Melissa Wolf with Anthony Haden Guest, Donald Goddard, Betty Tompkins, Bill Mutter, David Sandlin, Bonnie Sherk and Maynard Monrow.
Paul Lamarre and Melissa Wolf began the Starving Artists Cookbook project by producing a series of video verité kitchen portraits in the East Village during the late 1980s. By turns playful and profoundly serious, it was also an elegy of sorts. New York was gentrifying, HIV/AIDS was exacting a horrific toll on the city’s cultural fabric, and the intimate art world’ was metamorphosing into the global art market’ After the duo had completed more than 160 such portraits and collected original recipes and food-related artworks from an extraordinary roster of artists and gallerists, Lamarre and Wolf’s project culminated in a limited-edition artists’ book and a ten-hour video series, which was screened over multiple nights at Anthology Film Archives in 1989. Presented by Arthur Fournier in collaboration with EIDIA House.
We’ve assembled a slide show with some of the best works on view, many of which can be purchased and others that you can only see if you visit the fair.
