Oregon Man Risks Jail Time In Order To Save Dying Bear

Well would you look at that, there are still some pretty solid people in the world.

Corey Hancock, a photographer from Salem, Oregon, was on a recent hike when heavy rains forced him to turn back around. But Hancock noticed something you don’t see everyday: a dying black bear cub lying in his path.

Here’s what Hancock had to say to Oregon Live.

“It was laying on its back, barely moving. It twisted a couple times. Its paws weren’t moving. It wasn’t breathing. It was dying.”

So what did Hancock decide to do? He watched it for a while to see if any other bears where in the area, and when it was all clear Hancock picked it up and wrapped it up in his flannel. Hancock shared this photo on his Facebook.

But not to worry, as Hancock was able to get the black bear cub, who was “cold, severely dehydrated, emaciated, and lethargic” some help. Hancock took the cub to the Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center, where he was soon stabilized. Good going, man. The bear is now in the custody of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

But get this, did you know that Hancock could have actually been fined $6,000 for taking a bear from the woods? Hancock could have also gone to jail. Now there is no word yet if Hancock will be facing any consequences, but I highly doubt it because he just saved a freaking bear.

It’s not like this happened:
