In a world where people get validation constantly on social media through likes, hearts, and draft folder comments it’s really hard for a compliment to have weight. Especially compliments for girls as they are swamped with them by aforementioned likes, but also through DMs and in everyday life outside the screens. Therefore it’s a legitimate skill to know how to give a compliment to a woman, regardless if it’s someone you’re dating, barely know, or approaching blindly at the supermarket.
But there is a difference between complimenting a person you’re already intimate, and someone you’re just meeting. For hitting on women it’s nice to have a small hint in your mind, it’s called the push-pull technique and it states that opening with just a compliment is usually a dead end. Since you don’t know the person a compliment, no matter how good and sincere it is, can create awkwardness which you should break up with a small joke. So saying something like “Hey, I really like your style”, should be immediately followed by “we don’t get to see many hipster-cowgirls in this area” or similar.
Which leads us to the first thing to compliment the girls on.
Fashion sense
One of the main differences between guys and girls is how much significance they give to clothing. And while the gap is shortening, it’s still huge and the majority of women are really into fashion while the majority of men are not. Therefore complimenting someone on something they value highly is a no-brainer. So sentences like “I love your fashion sense”, “You have great, unique style” are sure to induce a smile.

Hair is another thing that is far more important to women than men, sorry feminists, the differences are strong and real. We’ve all seen the cliche of a girl being mad at her boyfriend for not noticing her new haircut, at least in the movies, and we should learn from it. A change of a haircut should never go unnoticed and unpraised, as long as it’s true, and as for strangers, the haircut is still a good go-to place. The length, the style, the authenticity, if there’s any, all good points for a compliment.
Shoes
This falls in with the fashion sense but for women, shoes are so important that they deserve their own category. And there is a such a vast choice for women for footwear that there is literally no excuse for those who wear something every other girl wears also. If you want to make a girl feel really good just compliment her on her shoes, “They really go well with your outfit”, “that’s a really good choice”, it’s not brain science.
Cooking
Even if your girl isn’t the homemaker type, she will probably try to make you something at one point, and make sure to express your gratitude and satisfaction as that will make her want to do it again. “I could eat this every day” is a classic for a reason but it could backfire as she might take it literally after a year or two in marriage. A clean plate and seconds are a compliment enough but go for the “I’ll wash the dishes since you’ve made this amazing meal” if you want to step it up.
Hard Work
Guys have the tendency to believe that everything a hot girl gets is due to her looks, and while that is the case in a lot of situations, they too have to put hard work to achieve some results. Don’t let that go notice, effort should be appreciated, so if your girl, or a girl you like, got the promotion she was eyeing for a while, commend her on her perseverance, determination, and dedication to her goal, notice how much intention she put in making her task happen.
