Travel: Swinging Island Golf at Provo Golf Club, Turks and Caicos

Admittedly, it would be a trick to create a bad golf course on any Caribbean Island. The often perfect weather combines with ideal conditions, lush greenery and pleasant views to forge an ideal environment for any golf traveler.

So, when the trade winds turned nasty during a recent visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands, The Provo Golf Club had to face a review during less than proper golfing conditions. Pockets of sun allowed for occasional photography, but winter squalls brought aggressive winds and sheets of rain to the Turks and Caicos. How would the Provo Golf Club hold up in the surprising weather?

The joint had nothing to worry about as the staff and greens crew keep the tournament quality course in immaculate condition, making sure the ground in an already humid climate can handle the extra runoff from unexpected rains. (The course is in high season now.) With palm trees lining every fairway and plenty of sand surrounding and dotting each hole, there’s an easy tropical vibe on every hole.

However, with four 500+ yard holes highlighting the trail, there’s plenty to challenge even the most laid-back player. Provo’s signature hole is number 17 (bottom photo), a par three with a green surrounded by water. We don’t discuss where we’ve seen that act before, but 17 does offer a test of accuracy before players finish on the wide open 18th (middle photo).

Before, after or during the round, there’s a fully stocked pro shop with a friendly staff willing to lend a hand. The excellent and well-stocked club house bar and grill next door offers all the traditional food and drink any player would need on the course. Since you’re in the islands, I always recommend that traditional simple daiquiri (white rum, lime juice, simple syrup) and the conch chowder.

The course is an easy distance from the major resorts on Provo. I got there from my perch at the elite Seven Stars Resort and Spa within 10 minutes by car. Provo Golf Club is open year round, though play slows during the dog days of island summer. Club members, tourists and locals are welcome to play.
