Apple Will Follow Netflix with Original Scripted Shows and Movies

Apple is reportedly looking at moving in on Netflix’s territory by developing its own original movies and TV shows, with this exclusive content being made available to subscribers of its Apple Music service.

Apple Music has struggled to rival the likes of Spotify, so Apple is allegedly looking to increase its appeal by way of bolstering the lineup of content it offers, adding TV shows and films into the mix, too. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has been courting veteran producers in recent months in order to sign scripts for exclusive TV shows, with it looking to eventually develop original programming similar to Netflix Originals. Film scripts are also on the cards, though this is considered less of a priority.

Netflix Originals such as House of Cards and Daredevil have proven to be incredibly lucrative for the streaming service, with them routinely ranking among the best shows offered by any broadcaster. Apple is reportedly looking to secure its own version of HBO’s Westworld or Netflix’s Stranger Things, which would help convince people to move away from Spotify in favor of the company’s more robust service.

It’s uncertain whether or not Apple Music would undergo a brand change as part of this transition, but the company is reportedly still looking to keep streaming music as its focus, with it refraining from following in the footsteps of Netflix by not offering content outside of its own programming. It’s uncertain whether or not the popularity of such a service would prompt a change in direction for Apple, and it’s certainly within the company’s grasp to develop an all-singing, all-dancing platform that offers streamed music, movies and TV shows, but for the time being Apple has its sights firmly set on blowing Spotify out of the water.

According to reports Apple will have some of its new programming lined up by the end of 2017, with the company having previously acquired the rights to a half-hour version of James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ and a documentary featuring Dr. Dre. Apple has been steadily increasing its focus upon its services business, moving away from hardware outside of the iPhone in the process, though has thus far struggled to make a game-changing impact considering the huge financial backing it has invested into it. The Silicon Valley tech giant will be hoping that this new move will help increase its profitability in this sector.
