There are many ways to protest. Art is just one of them, but its impact lasts long after rallying cries have quieted and protesters have dispersed. The water protectors at Standing Rock, and the allies who support them, spread their visually evocative messages for months across social media with hashtags like #nodaplartmovement.
These are just a sampling of the powerful images that were created and shared to build solidarity and raise awareness about the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Ultimately, the efforts of the protesters were successful, as construction of the pipeline has been halted. Thus the art will endure, both as a testimony to and a reminder of the protesters’ courageous fight.
