Surveillance footage has captured a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 setting on fire in someone’s home, showing video evidence of the issue that has caused the South Korean company to cease production of the smartphones.
The footage, obtained by the Associated Press, shows Dee DeCasa of Honolulu bringing her device into the kitchen after it had reportedly set on fire while she was browsing the Samsung website. After attempting to rectify the issue, she can then be seen fainting onto a sofa following the ordeal.
Speaking to the Associated Press, DeCasa said: “I had it in my hand and then smoke started spewing out this green yucky thing.” DeCasa then said that she had put the device into a pan before calling emergency services, though the smartphone continued smoking for another 20 minutes until they arrived.
Samsung announced earlier this week that it was going to discontinue the Galaxy Note 7, a drastic measure that saw the company’s shares fall dramatically and will no doubt put a considerable dent in its finances. This discontinuation came after an initial global recall of the first models of the device, followed by another recall when it was discovered that replacement models suffered a similar issue, too. Such is the prevalence of this unfortunate problem that Samsung even began sending out flameproof boxes for users to send their devices back to the company.
