Pizza delivery drones are on their way, because apparently we’re not fat and lazy enough.
Previously the act of ordering a pizza would have at least seen one participant in the transaction getting some exercise, with the pizza delivery boy (or man depending upon his life choices) getting to stretch his legs while delivering you your cheesy circle of cholesterol and heart burn. But now Domino’s is looking to eradicate the need for hiring these delivery boys, with the pizza chain being given the green light in New Zealand to launch the first commercial drone delivery service in the world.
Working alongside drone company Flirtey, Domino’s will begin deploying their fleets of drones in the country later this year. The service will initially have a limited roll-out, with it only delivering to customers within a certain range, though Domino’s will eventually build upon their service in line with customer feedback. Only specific items on their menu will be available for drone delivery, so if you want to order a pizza the size of your house then unfortunately it’ll probably be brought to your door by some beleaguered driver on a scooter.
New Zealand introduced new laws last year that allowed the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for recreational and commercial purposes, with the country now the first to give the go ahead to commercial drone flights, this new development will likely pique the internet of companies such as Amazon, who are preparing their Amazon Air drone delivery service for launch in the near future.
Though there have been concerns about the potential dangers of drone deliveries, Domino’s Group chief executive and managing director Don Meij believes it’ll provide a safer delivery option for the company, with it also eradicating issues such as traffic and distance. He said: “Domino’s is all about providing customers with choice and making customer’s lives easier. Adding innovation such as drone deliveries means customers can experience cutting-edge technology and the convenience of having their Supreme pizza delivered via air to their door. This is the future.”
