Suicide Squad’s Bad Reviews Lead to Online Petition Against Rotten Tomatoes

Suicide Squad has received some mixed reviews from critics, with it currently holding a 36% rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 5.3 out of 10.

However, rather than accept that Suicide Squad may not be a particularly good movie, many overly dedicated fans of the DC Universe have instead pointed the finger of blame at reviewers, accusing them of “collusion” and staging a vague conspiracy against movie adaptations of DC comic books. Despite Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy being one of the most well-received in film history, that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both received less than favorable ratings from critics is seen as evidence of this conspiracy, with online slacktivists now banding together in order to bring down the mighty Rotten Tomatoes once and for all.

A petition on Change.org titled ‘Shutdown Rotten Tomatoes’ has now received over 9,000 supporters, just shy of its goal of 10,000. The petition reads:

“We need this site to be shut down because It’s Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like

1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016

2- Suicide Squad 2016

and that Affects people’s opinion even if it’s a really great movies”

Though Rotten Tomatoes is a review aggregator and therefore isn’t responsible for the negative reviews the movie is receiving, that hasn’t prevented many from agreeing with the petition’s sentiment that the entire site should be shut down for its crimes. One commenter wrote: “I love both Man of Steel and the Ultimate Cut of Batman v Superman and I’m really bummed out by the reviews for Suicide Squad. I don’t want DC Films to be in the same vain of the Transformers movies and I think it’s pathetic that people want the universe to fail.” Another added:  Rotten Tomatoes is just a bunch of horrible critics who think that they’re professionals because they have their own website. They’re normal people, with biased prejudices and unjust mentalities.” You hear that, critics? You need to sort out mentalities, and try to make them more just!

Warner Bros.

This petition won’t actually lead to anything, predominantly as a result of it being incredibly dumb but also because Warner Bros – the company that distributed both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman – own a 30% stake in Rotten Tomatoes. If the critics of Rotten Tomatoes (who, as previously mentioned, don’t actually exist) are conspiring against DC film adaptations, then it would be odd of them to do so on a property that is owned by the company selling these movies.
