Detox Mondays | Beat the Heat with this Healthy Frozen Treat

The dog days are upon us and the struggle is real. This detoxifying smoothie is made with frozen fruit and fresh basil to cool your body down and replenish you from the inside out! Most people don’t know that unsweetened, frozen fruit has the same health benefits as whole fruits, and that makes our frozen smoothies easy to throw together and inexpensive to make. Enjoy it for breakfast, as a post-beach snack or to prep your body pre-workout!

The Ingredients**

  • 1 cup frozen, unsweetened raspberries
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • ¼ cup frozen, unsweetened strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • Juice from ½ lemon
  • Small handful of fresh basil
**This recipe makes 2 smoothies

The Process

Blend all of the ingredients except the lemon together in a blender or Magic Bullet. Blend until smooth and then squeeze lemon juice to the top. Add lemon to taste. Pour and enjoy.

The Superfood

This smoothie uses strawberries, raspberries and ginger for antioxidants and detoxification, but the winning superfood here is the basil. When it comes to detoxification, basil specifically targets the kidneys and helps remove toxins from our bloodstream. Things like processed ingredients, alcohol and sugar takes a huge toll on our kidneys over time, so eating basil lets us get rid of all the junk that our kidneys have trouble processing.

The Logic

Basil has all the nutrients we need to clean up our kidneys and, by doing so, our bodies. When ingested, basil produces detoxifying enzymes to cleanse our system while also acting as a natural adaptogen – an herbal medicine that lets our body normalize when something isn’t right in our gut.
